"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe,
wings to the mind, flight to the imagination,
and charm and gaiety to life and to everything."

- Plato

Welcome to the music page!

Mrs. Celia Schmaltz is a 2002 graduate of the University of Mary with degrees in Elementary and Secondary Vocal/Instrumental Music Education. Mrs. Schmaltz is currently a graduate student at the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, England. She plans to earn her MA in World Music Studies (ethnomusicology) with an emphasis in African Music in August of 2012. Mrs. Schmaltz is an active member of the North Dakota Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, of which she is has been the West Region Representative since 2007. She was the site coordinator for the Junior High All State Choirs in 2008-2009, was the North Dakota Junior High All State Choirs auditions chairman for six years, and served as the North Dakota Junior High Repertoire and Standards chairman for four years. Besides her membership with the American Choral Directors Association, Mrs. Schmaltz is a member of MENC (The National Music Educations Association) and OAKE (Organization for Kodaly Educators.) Mrs. Schmaltz also enjoys an active performance schedule. She has been the principal French Horn player for the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra since 2002, and principal French Horn player for the Minot Symphony since 2006. She also plays with the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony on a regular basis. Mrs. Schmaltz has been listed in the Who's Who of American Women since 2005, and was listed in the Who's Who of Emerging Leaders. In recent years she has been a member of the North Dakota Woodwind Octet, served on the University of Mary Alumni Council, and has also been the player representative for the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra Board of Directors. Additionally, she has received training in Love and Logic, Top 20 Teachers, and has completed Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 in World Music Drumming. Mrs. Schmaltz has been a guest clinician at area schools in Bismarck-Mandan and in Saskatchewan as an instrumentalist, choral instructor, and ethnomusicologist. Before teaching at St. Mary's Grade School, Mrs. Schmaltz worked for Bismarck Public Schools with students who had Learning Disabilities. 2011-2012 will mark Mrs. Schmaltz's 9th year at St. Mary's Grade School.

We are very proud of our music programs here at St. Mary's. The programs we offer are:

K-6 General Music

The state of North Dakota requires all students in grades 1-6 to have 90 minutes per week of instruction in music. Unlike most public schools in the Bismarck-Mandan area, all 90 minutes are spent with a music specialist. Our kindergarten students also spend 60 minutes per week with a music specialist. Aside from hands-on experience, students are encouraged to connect music and the arts to all other content areas. Because Mrs. Schmaltz is an ethnomusicologist, a wide variety of world music is taught across all grade levels. Students are given instruction on vocal production and singing, but are also taught to play a number of different instruments. Orff instruments, recorders, drums, ukuleles, and various world percussion are utilized throughout the school year. The ultimate goal is proficiency in reading and writing music. All instruction meets the North Dakota Standards and Benchmarks for music education.

Junior High Choir

The junior high choir is made up of students in grade 7 and grade 8. Our students have choral instruction 5 days a week, 45 minutes a day- an ideal situation. We encourage our students to participate in both band and choir, so our music schedules do not conflict with one another. Our students are routinely selected to participate in the North Dakota Junior High All-State Choirs. St. Mary's choirs have been guest artists with the St. Mary's Central High School choir as well as the Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus.
